two new AVM stories....

Ha, so much for the new approach. You see how that worked out. I went even longer than the last time without a post... However, this time I have something to write about. If for no other reason but to get the thoughts out of my head.

On June 25 2009, I got news about Michael Jackson's demise just like many of you. I took that news rather hard because I grew up to Michael Jackson and his brothers in the Jackson 5. Now usually given a few years I would struggle to remember that date. However this date I am sure to remember because not only did Micheal die, but it was the day that I found out that I had a brain AVM which had bled.

Orcas woman undergoes brain surgery

Orcas resident Theresa Howard was rushed to the hospital in Anacortes for a very severe migraine headache on Friday, July 17.

She had been suffering from the headaches for more than a week. Upon arrival at the hospital, she was transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She was diagnosed with a condition called Arteriovenous Malformation or AVM. It is something she was born with and affects around 300,000 people a year. Most live a normal life and don’t even know they have this abnormality....

I thought I would go for a Literary theme.
I after all do have some books right now that are up for sale on ebay.

it is my eBay page... shows all of my eBay things...

It's funny that I am selling stuff on ebay... There was a point that I said "I cannot sell stuff on ebay... my stroke was too big." But yet there I am... selling things on eBay... my typing is getting better... I still have some mis-spellings but I am there.

I think it's funny that I cannot get a job... I mean a real job... They get one look at what my stroke has done and instantly they will call me (don't call them).

I really pissed me off the first hundred or so times.

I can not believe that the government dose nothing (besides Social Security) for AVM persons... I just does not make sense to me.
I guess we just do not make up a voting block large enough. F&CKERS!
So I welcome you to bid on eBay... it could make my day.

and there you have it... good day.

A New AVM Group... TAAF

About Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)

Basic Blood Vessel Anatomy in the Brain

An artery is a blood vessel that carries blood that is high in oxygen and nutrients from the heart to nourish other parts of the body. The walls of an artery are very elastic as they are meant to withstand high pressure as blood is pumped out of the heart. The arteries gradually become smaller and smaller as they get out to the tissues until reaching the capillary bed, which consists of tiny, thin-walled vessels, where oxygen and nutrients exchange with carbon dioxide and waste products.

The blood then continues into the veins, blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. Normally, as the high-pressure arterial blood is pumped through a capillary bed there is a gradual decrease in blood pressure. The walls of veins are therefore not as elastic as arteries as they are not meant to carry blood under high pressure.

In the brain, the veins drain blood into venous dural sinuses (not to be confused with the air-filled sinuses in the facial bones that are often associated with sinus infections, etc.). Venous dural sinuses are folds in the dura mater (lining of the brain) that collect blood and then drain into the internal jugular veins that bring blood back to the heart...

I continue my brain surgery narrative, reflecting on how I and my friends and family coped with learning about my surgery. Someday I will be clever enough to put a little thingy on the margin of my blog to redirect you in case you wanted to read from the beginning. And I’d compile all the brain surgery blogs in one place. That would be really clever. Sorry, I’m not there yet. Here’s the beginning of them.

Soliloquy

It's been raining almost constantly here for two days now. The air pressure is causing head and body aches. I guess I'm gonna have to admit to aging at some point...but not quite yet. There's a lot more going on then just the normal aging process but it's not something I really discuss much. People who know me well know bits and pieces but I rarely just lay it all out there when it comes to my health issues. I've been that way for many years now...intensely private when it comes to sharing that information in any but the most surface of ways. I've been thinking a lot about that recently...thinking about why I'm so tight lipped about it...

I have one... it popped(3 times)... In my head...I basically had a stroke... It left me basically paralyzed on my right side. My leg made good strides in therapy... my arm did not.
So today I have some movement in my leg... my arm basically just hangs there. (don't get me wrong... I have feeling in my right arm... I can move it, all though it is limited to your just up and down type movements.

AVM News and something...

Matt's Updates

Well we are back at home and all is well. Matt had the radiation surgery today. Poor baby, when they were trying to start the IV they had to stick him 5 or 6 times. Finally, they got the IV started and things got better. Matt was very nervous about having the halo put on this morning, of course who wouldn't be nervous having 4 screws put into your skull. Anyway, they got all of that done and he went in for a CT scan and to have an angiogram done. The neurosurgeon that has been working with Matt came out and told me that the AVM had grown a little bit, but that he expected it to do that. The AVM went from about 1cm to 2cm. He told me that it was very treatable and that the radiosurgey was a go for today.

Matt went to recovery and then back to the floor. We waited for the doctors to form their plan and then at 2:00 they took him to do the actual radiation treatment. They give the radiation in 5 doses, and it took about 30 minutes. After that they took the halo off and we were on our way back up to the floor for them to discharge him. The radiology oncologist came out and talked to me and said that all had gone well and that now we are in the waiting part of the treatment. It will take a year or so before they can tell if the radiation surgery worked or not. What they are hoping for is that the radiation will cause the blood vessels that are feeding the AVM will get scar tissue on them and that they will essentially die. They will keep an eye on him for the next couple of years to make sure that all is still going well and that the AVM is not growing anymore. The oncology doctor told me that the way that the AVM is positioned that it had actually moved the good brain tissue out of the way and gave them a much better line of fire for the radiation. By this happening there is less a chance for the radiation to damage the good brain tissue. Once again we are seeing how awesome our God is and that He is still in control of this situtation.

We have been so blessed by having great doctors, but we also know that our Lord is the one that is giving those doctors the skills and know how to do what they are doing. I am so happy to be writing this and so happy to be telling you about how wonderful Matt is doing. We came home and Matt helped unload the car and carry stuff in and he was back to doing his normal stuff as soon as we got home. He told me that he was not going to let a little bit of pain from the screws in his head stop him from carrying on with his life. Matt just got finished eating a big bowl of chili, so we know all is well!!! Please continue to pray for Matt and that over the next year that God will continue to do the good work that He started. We are looking forward to the day when they look at us and tell us that the AVM is dead and not drawing blood to it anymore. Thank you for all your prayers, love and support it has been a long year and we are so hopeful about what the future holds for us and all the glory and thanks go to the wonderful God that we love and serve.

Life and fame in brain surgeon's hands

By CHLOE JOHNSON

This week will probably be Jason Napier’s most significant week of his life – and he’s only 23. His life is in the hands of brain surgeons. He may wake up blind or mute. Or he may die.

But Jason, a former retail manager in Wellington, hasn’t locked the doors and crumbled into a depressive state like some may imagine when you’ve been warned you may be living your last days.

I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Hi Family and Friends!

How is everyone? There is so much to write, I don't know where to begin! I'm going to start with the night before we left for Denver! So, Tuesday after work, we got Hanz's tote bag full of his things (food, bowl, snacks, brush, etc.) and headed to Rockport, where Marks brother Jim and his wife Shelley would be taking care of our furry kid! Jim and Shelley treated us to dinner @ HuDat - it was delicious! - then we headed back to their house for a bit. By the time we left (I did good - I didn't cry this time when we left Hanz!) and got home, it was late. Mark lay down for a bit and fell asleep. I stayed up late reading and doing a few things, like changing Sabas clothes. In any case, we should have changed my wound dressing that evening, but I didn't want to wake Mark up and figured we would take care of it in the morning. Well, I got up @ 3:30 am, and started trying to get some packing done. Mark got up and worked on my wound dressing and that really set us back on time! Our flight was to leave @ 6am and we got to the airport @ 5:40am. On the way to the airport, we were remembering things we didn't pack, so when the guy @ the American Airline counter said we had to take the next flight, I figured we could go back home and pack a little better!

My Brother's Diagnosis: Arteriovenous Malformations

What are arteriovenous malformations?

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are defects of the circulatory system that are generally believed to arise during embryonic or fetal development or soon after birth. They are comprised of snarled tangles of arteries and veins. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the body’s cells; veins return oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs and heart. The presence of an AVM disrupts this vital cyclical process. Although AVMs can develop in many different sites, those located in the brain or spinal cord—the two parts of the central nervous system—can have especially widespread effects on the body.

AVMs of the brain or spinal cord (neurological AVMs) are believed to affect approximately 300,000 Americans. They occur in males and females of all racial or ethnic backgrounds at roughly equal rates.

Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)

The University of Florida offers highly specialized treatment for AVM. Approximately 100 patients with AVM are seen each year at the University of Florida.

These Neurological Surgery physicians at UF are experts in the care and treatment of brain AVMs:

Drawing: Illustration of AVMAbout AVM

Brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain which can cause bleeding in the brain, seizures, or stroke-like symptoms (weakness, numbness, tingli ng). The cause of AVMs is unknown.

Symptoms

Brain AVMs can bleed in the brain in which case patients may have a severe headache, nausea and vomiting, blurred vision, stiff neck, or loss of consciousness. They can also cause seizures. They may also cause stroke-like symptoms such as paralysis, weakness, numbness, vision problems, balance or coordination problems, or speech difficulties.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of a brain AVM is made by CT scan, MRI, and catheter cerebral angiogram.

Treatment

The treatment of a brain AVM is either by surgery (opening the skull and surgically removing the AVM from the brain ), embolization (injecting substances into the AVM to block off the abnormal vessels via tiny plastic tubes inserted in the patient's groin and navigated to the brain by x-ray guidance and not requiring surgery), or radiosurgery (a one-time treatment of high-focused radiation to the brain AVM).

Angiogram showing
a mass of tangled vessels

Drawing depiciting
endovascular catheterization

Brain AVMs are either treated after they have caused bleeding, or in some patients, an AVM is found before it has bled, and is treated to prevent it from bleeding.

Prognosis

Once a patient recovers from an AVM bleeding, he or she can have a good recovery depending on the severity of the bleed and the disability caused by the bleed.

5 Warning signs of Stroke

"Surviving Stroke: A Personal Story

Brain Scientist Jill Bolte Taylor on Her Stroke, Recovery, and the Warning Signs Everyone Needs to Know

By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Feature

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

It all started with a headache -- pounding pain behind the left eye -- that wouldn't go away.

A healthy 37-year-old at the time, Jill Bolte Taylor tried to shake the pain with a cardio workout. But that didn't work.

Feeling rocky, Taylor headed for her shower. She noticed herself losing coordination and struggling with balance -- she had to lean against her shower wall.

The shower's roar startled her, and her sense of where her body began and ended was fading. "My perception of myself was that I was a fluid," Taylor tells WebMD.

When she got out of the shower, her right arm flopped against her body. "Oh my gosh, I'm having a stroke!" Taylor later wrote in her book, My Stroke of Insight.

As a Harvard-trained brain scientist, Taylor knew far more about the brain, and strokes, than most people.

And although on one level she was fascinated by what she was experiencing, the planning part of her brain, which was sputtering, knew it was do or die.

Taylor writes that she wanted to lie down and rest. "But resounding like thunder from deep within my being, a commanding voice spoke clearly to me: If you lie down now you will never get up!"
Calling for Help

Taylor was experiencing a rare type of hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke caused by a malformed connection -- called an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) -- between an artery and a vein in her brain.

The bleeding flooded parts of Taylor's brain involved with movement, speech, physical boundaries, and senses. As a result, the concept of calling "911" was lost to her.

Taylor struggled to remember her work phone number, scrawling the numbers on paper. She writes that the numbers looked like "squiggles," which she matched to the squiggles on her phone.

A co-worker answered, recognized Taylor's voice from her groans, rushed over, and got her to a hospital.

After being in the hospital for five days for her stroke, Taylor later had surgery to correct her AVM. The surgery was a success -- but that was just the beginning of a stroke recovery that took eight years."

AMV News

A wowzing story...

For My Sister, the Superhuman

On October 4, 2007, my sister AL suffered a stroke due to a ruptured and bleeding cerebral AVM . Several months later, I sat down and wrote about the experience. My main intention was self-therapy through writing, but I also wanted to record some of the details that I thought (correctly) would fade from my memory over time.

Recently, AL and I had a conversation about how little she remembers from the weeks after the stroke (click here for a little more fore/background). I told her about my AVM journal and she was keen, so today I'm going to mail her a copy of it in its entirety. Please read on for a couple of excerpts....

AVM News and Me Too...

not me... another form of AVM.

Latest Medical Report 13 May 2009

See below.

My medical treatment is now only a daily tablet of low dose aspirin.

_________________________________________

The recent CT of the abdomen and pelvis (20/3/09) demonstrates that the lesion related to the left iliac arterial and venous system is a pelvic arteriovenous malformation. This is a congenital lesion that given this man's duplicated renal system (left-sided !VC), represents congenital variant in his venous anatomy.
The AVM is an incidental finding. There are real risks related to treating the AVM related to embolisation, both locally including to the sciatic nerve and distally to the peripheral arterial tree. At the moment there appear to be few benefits in treating the AVM. Mr Fry is asymptomatic and there is no evidence of distal embolus or circulatory compromise. The AVM in itself does not represent a problem as a space occupying lesion.
At this stage as the risks of treatment outweigh the potential benefits I believe we should adopt a wait and see approach before we intervene in treating the AVM looking for evidence of local symptoms or distal embolisation.
The second problem for this man is his chronic aortic dissection. This is stable. The only ongoing potential clinical problem would be aneurysmal degeneration of the false lumen. This can be well monitored with yearly imaging. Similarly, yearly imaging would monitor the AVM. As such a yearly angio CT looking at both the abdominal aorta and the left-sided pelvic AVM would be reasonable. I have given Mr Fry a form for his next imaging.
The only other issue for this man is the resolving DVT in his left leg. As I have mentioned in my previous letter, given the fact that the thrombus has essentially resolved and the d.dima level is normal, it would be reasonable for this man to manage his venous thromboembolism risk with long term low dose Aspirin rather than Warfarin therapy. Mr Fry has a pair of surgical compression stockings. At this stage he should wear these for symptomatic relief. From my point of view I look forward to seeing this man again in one year.

and of course...

Happy, no matter what!

Hey Friends, Family and/or Prayer Warriors!

As always I want to say how much it means to me to have so many of your prayers! I am very blessed and that is what helps get me through my work days, my procedures, the bleeds - everything I endure! There is always that darned pain! Hmmm... I guess I should start w/the latest news and go backwards? I'll probably jump around and confuse everyone!

At the end of my work day Friday I was soooo happy! I just could not believe another week had gone by and I've got TWO DAYS to spend with Hanz and Mark! (Like Mark says, notice the pecking order)! My baby Hanz is so adorable and unbelievably cute! Such a winning personality! I was showing one of my friends @ the main office Hanz' photo and she could not believe when I told her that he drags that duck that mom gave him for Easter everywhere! Hanz grabs the duck, looks @ me and then starts running around the house with it, so I'll chase him! Most times, he's too quick, so he'll wait for me to almost catch up to him, before he starts running off again! I can only go "round the dining room, through one bedroom and the hall" about 5 times before I just poop out! I tell Hanz, "Mommie is too told for that"!

Oh! Back to my stuff! Well, we were up late Friday night, so I was waking up about 8:30 am on Saturday. Soon as my eyes opened up, my first thought was, that I would go get Hanz and bring him back to bed! My neck felt wet, so when my hand touched that area, I could pretty much tell I would be seeing blood. Yup! So as usual, I go, "Mark, I'm bleeding"! As usual, he goes, "You are kidding"! So we start the drill! I was dripping blood on the way to the bathroom, and I got my dressing off my face and I could see where it was bleeding from. Mark had just pointed out that area the night before when we was changing my dressing - saying that the very same area looked like it would be giving me trouble! Actually, soon as I removed the dressing and put some pressure on the area, it stopped bleeding very soon! Mark cleaned the area and redressed it and we just went about our business! I ran a couple of errands, then came home to spend more time w/my two favorite people! Later that night, I grabbed Hanz and he and I headed off for bed! Mark, I knew would be falling asleep on the couch, which he did. About 1am I heard or felt something, so I turned the bedside lamp on. I saw Hanz was up and looking @ something on the bed. Hanz had thrown up, poor baby! I looked @ it and apparently he had eated some gold threading from one of the cushions near where I had my Build a Bears, Saba and Rulon! Hanz is always wanting to get to Saba, and I'm sure that tassle w/gold threading caught his eye! Hanz is like having a toddler around 24/7! We have to watch him and everything he puts in his mouth! Course we had to change the sheets, but he ended up sleeping w/us that night all the way through for the first time!

Anyway, it's late and I'm gonna wrap this up soon! Here is a photo of the dinner my sister made for us on my birthday, May 1st! She made arroz con pollo (chicken w/rice) and mom made tortillas!

My next trip to Denver will be June 10, 11 and 12th! I need to be doing some exercises to make sure my mouth can open wider or the anesthesiologist is threatening me w/a trach! Yikes! As always, thank you all so much for all your love, support and prayers! Could not do this without you!

Don't forget! If you get a chance, check out my buddy Shalon's blog and website! She always has great stuff on there and she's adorable! You can get to her sites from mine!

Love to all!

Cyndi

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you about something that happened the other day @ work! I had gotten a call from a lady that had been there before w/a defendant. She is his caregiver and being in the medical field, she was interested in learning more about my avm. Her name is Julie Ann - and she came into the office again and surprised me w/a nice gift! She gave me a wooden box that opened up, and inside were a couple of things! One was a silver compact/pillbox and on the cover of that it says, "Being normal is over-rated"! There are also little slips of paper in that box, that Julie Ann says when I meet an obstacle in dealing w/my avm, I should write that on one of the papers and pray about it. She herself put some wooden letters on the cover of that wooden box that say, FAITH BOX and it also has a red heart on the front of that wooden box! Julie says she was so impressed with my great outlook on everything in dealing w/my avm, and she was moved by my blog and all I had written! Wasn't that sweet of her to come by and tell me all this! She is really nice and wants to help me in any way she can! I tell her that is one of the reasons I have this blog - to help people know what someone w/an avm goes through on a daily basis! So that more people can understand what having an avm is all about!

I don't know why... but I have a real thing for Led Zeppelin. I guess it is from having a brain AVM.... :-)

Yes for those who are just joining us... I have a brain AVM. It first showed it self in 1999 (i think) with a bleed.. from there I had Gamma-knife surgery... I was told it was goan... I had regular MRI's every 6 months and then every year. (time flew by) Until summer 2004... when it popped! I was damn near killed... I have very little memory of the next 6 months. In fact I have very little memory since... I was fired from my job... I used to be a Manager at Nordic Products. (A Hot Tub Manufacture) I made an okay living... $54,600/yr. I was given SSI... to the tune of $1500 per month... after I deduct my medical insurance I get $1400... I, with my wife's help, have gone through my life savings... About $70,000. I don't know what's going to happen... but it ain't gonna be pleasant...

So excuse my idiot tendances as I try to get my ability to type back... and my ability to remember what happens one minute to the next... I would normally say "help me right here... but what would come of it.

Here have some youtube...

Blood Draw Adventures and AVM Journal

Doctor's appointment update: I survived! After procrastinating for literally years (read about it here and here), I found a doctor and had myself checked out. My visit was uneventful until I went to the lab to have my blood drawn. The tech asked me if I've ever fainted during a blood draw and I said no, I haven't had this done in a loooong time, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Her first try was painful. I wasn't looking at the site, but it felt like she was digging a ditch with that needle. I felt a sudden rush of heat and said, "Woah, I don't feel so good." Apparently I was having what is referred to in medical jargon as a vasovagal response - what a terrible feeling! I was given an ice pack and told to lay my head down. Several minutes later, the tech asked if I wanted to go ahead with the blood draw. "Absolutely," I replied. "I don't want to have to fast again!" So we went to find an exam room where I could lie down. She tried again, in my other arm this time, and everything went smoothly.

At the end of the visit, I felt fantastic. As I skipped along to my office, I texted my little sister AL: "Just had my blood drawn and almost fainted. Guess I'm not as tough as you." AL suffered a stroke in October of 2007 due to a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) - this picture at right gives an idea of what an AVM might look like. In the months that followed, she had to undergo invasive brain surgery and countless medical tests and procedures. After all that, I figured that a blood draw would be a piece of cake for her.

AL texted me back: "Oh but you are! I would probably faint too." Hmmm. Later that day, she called me. She said that she doesn't really remember having her blood drawn in the hospital, even though it was done several times. The combination of intense pain, heavy and sustained medication, and brain bleeding have left her with huge gaps in her memory of the time she spent in the hospital.

AL said that it's weird to have these long stretches of time that she doesn't remember. Or she'll remember one random thing that happened, but not know exactly when it happened or what came before and after. This made me think of the time I sat down and wrote a journal about her (our) ordeal. I thought she might like to see it. Maybe it would help fill in one or two of the gaps. AL seemed excited about this. Thus, my assignment for the week became digging up the journal and sending her a copy. I'm looking forward to a re-read (writing the journal was so therapeutic at the time), and hope my sister finds something in there worth knowing, too. ..
